LS Electric said Monday that it has completed an official certification of 525 ultra-high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable.

LS Electric has successfully completed long-term reliability test of HVDC undersea and underground cables over the past year, and also has been officially recognized for stability and functionality.

The test was conducted in accordance with the technical specifications and international standards required by the Dutch state-run electricity provider TenneT. As LS Electric has completed the test, it is able to participate in bidding for large-scale HVDC projects in Europe and North America.

HVDC can send large amounts of current far away, so is being increasingly installed for long-distance transmission networks.

In addition, the company explained that competition for technology development between wire companies is fierce as HVDC cables are mostly used for renewable energy such as offshore wind power and solar power.

In particular, the 525 HVDC cable has the highest-voltage, and only a small number of companies, including LS Electric, have succeeded in commercializing it due to high technical barriers.

An official from LS Electric said, “With the global renewable energy policies such as the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the HVDC cable market will grow to tens of trillion won annually within 10 years.”
